Overview

The Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek is one of our longest teahouse treks: 30 days that join three great trails into one walk. You start on the Manaslu Circuit, slip into the hidden Nar Phu Valley, then finish on the Annapurna Circuit and the Poon Hill trail above Pokhara.

Along the way you cross three passes above 5,100 m: Larkya La (5,106 m), Kang La (5,322 m) and Thorong La (5,416 m). Each one is higher than the last, and each one drops you into a different valley, culture and landscape.

This trip is for strong walkers who want more than one circuit. If you only have two or three weeks, the Manaslu Circuit Trek or the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek may suit you better. Not sure which region to pick? Read our guide on Manaslu or Annapurna Circuit.

We arrange both restricted area permits, a licensed guide, lodges and transport. For the rules behind those permits, see our Nepal trekking permits guide.

Thirty days, three passes, three valleys. This trek links Manaslu, Nar Phu and Annapurna in one continuous walk, with a licensed guide, permits and lodges arranged for you.

What Is the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek?

The Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek is a 30-day guided teahouse trek in Nepal that links the Manaslu Circuit, Nar Phu Valley and Annapurna Circuit. It crosses Larkya La (5,106 m), Kang La (5,322 m) and Thorong La (5,416 m). It is strenuous, suits fit trekkers with high-altitude experience, and is best from September to November or March to May.

Since 22 March 2026, Nepal no longer requires two trekkers for a restricted area permit. That covers both Manaslu and Nar Phu, so solo trekkers can now do this route. A licensed guide and a registered trekking agency are still compulsory.

Why Choose the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek

  • Three circuits in one trip. You walk the full Manaslu Circuit, the Nar Phu Valley and the high half of the Annapurna Circuit without going home in between.
  • Three passes above 5,100 m. Larkya La, Kang La and Thorong La give you three very different crossings and three big mountain views.
  • Nar Phu, the quiet middle. Few trekkers reach Phu and Nar. You spend three nights in these stone villages, including a full rest day at Phu.
  • Natural acclimatization. By the time you reach Thorong La you have already slept at 4,000 m plus and crossed two passes. The highest pass feels less brutal than it does for most Annapurna Circuit trekkers.
  • A soft finish. After the passes you drop to the Tatopani hot spring, watch sunrise from Poon Hill and rest by the lake in Pokhara.
  • Big mountain line-up. Manaslu, Himlung, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, the Chulu peaks and Dhaulagiri all show up along the way.

Altitude and Acclimatization on the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek

You sleep above 3,000 m for 14 nights on this route, and above 4,000 m for five of them: Dharmasala, three nights in Phu and Nar, and Thorong Phedi. The plan has two full rest days, at Sama Gaun (Day 10) and Phu Gaon (Day 18). Use both for a gentle hike up and a night back down.

Two days need extra care. Day 17 climbs about 700 m from Meta to Phu. Day 22 goes from Manang straight to Thorong Phedi, a gain of about 900 m. It works because you have already been high for weeks, but walk slowly and drink plenty.

Watch for these signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): headache, nausea, dizziness, poor sleep and loss of appetite. Mild symptoms often ease with rest and water. Worsening symptoms mean going down. Your guide checks on you each evening and changes the plan if needed.

Kang La is higher than Larkya La, but it often feels easier on the way up because you start from Nar at 4,110 m. The real test is the steep, loose descent to Ngawal, so keep your trekking poles handy.

How Difficult Is the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek?

It is strenuous. You need no climbing skills, but you do need stamina, good knees and some past experience at altitude. Most walking days run 4 to 8 hours, and you walk on 21 of the 30 days.

  • Hardest days: Day 13 (Larkya La), Day 20 (Kang La) and Day 23 (Thorong La). Each is a long day of 8 hours or more with a pre-dawn start.
  • Snow and ice: early or late in the season, snow can lie on all three passes. Microspikes help on the icy sections.
  • A long time away: a month of simple lodges, cold nights and limited showers is a mental test too. Pack a book and patience.
  • Best preparation: three months of long hikes with a loaded daypack, hill or stair training and leg strength work. A previous trek above 4,000 m is a big help.
  • Talk to your doctor first if you have a heart, lung or blood pressure condition, or any condition that high altitude can make worse.

Culture Along the Three Passes Route

This trek crosses four cultural worlds in one month. Few routes in Nepal change this much from start to finish.

    • Lower Budhi Gandaki: from Soti Khola to Jagat you pass Gurung, Magar and Chhetri villages, terraced fields and a mix of Hindu and Buddhist shrines.
    • Nubri, the upper Manaslu valley: from Namrung onward the villages are Tibetan Buddhist. Expect mani walls, chortens and gompas in Lho, Sama Gaun and Samdo. This valley was once part of the salt trade route to Tibet.
    • Nar and Phu: two old stone villages with flat roofs, prayer flags and yak herds. People here still farm barley and move herds with the seasons. Walk on the left of mani walls and ask before you photograph people or prayer rooms.
    • Manang and Mustang: Manang is a busy trekking village with Tibetan roots. Over Thorong La, Muktinath is a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, and Kagbeni has a red monastery and narrow mud-brick lanes.
Muktinath is famous for its 108 water spouts. Many Hindu pilgrims walk under all of them, even in the cold.

    Best Time to Trek

    SeasonMonthsWhat to expectVerdict
AutumnSeptember to NovemberClear skies, cold mornings, short days, busy lodges near the passesBest overall
SpringMarch to MayLonger days, rhododendrons lower down, afternoon cloud, lower permit ratesVery good
WinterDecember to FebruaryDeep cold, many high lodges closed, passes often blocked by snowNot suitable for this route
MonsoonJune to AugustHeavy rain lower down, landslides and road closuresNot recommended
This trek needs two restricted area permits, Manaslu and Nar Phu. Both cost less from December to August than in autumn, so a spring start saves on both.
    • Start early in autumn: you reach Thorong La on Day 23. Starting in September or early October gives the best chance of clear, snow-free passes.
    • Spring timing: late March to early May is the sweet spot. Early March can leave deep snow on Kang La and Thorong La.
    • Winter: snow can close all three passes, and lodges in Phu, Nar and Thorong Phedi may shut.
    • Monsoon: roads to Soti Khola and from Kagbeni can wash out. The Nar Phu side gets less rain, but you still have to get there.

    Accommodation & Food

Hotels: You spend 5 nights in 3-star hotels, in Kathmandu and Pokhara, on a twin-share basis with breakfast.

Lodges (teahouses): On the trail you stay 24 nights in local lodges. Rooms are simple twin rooms, often with shared bathrooms. Hot showers usually cost extra.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included on the trek, with tea or coffee at meal times. Dal bhat is the trail favourite, and most lodges give free refills.

Nar Phu lodges: Phu, Nar and Meta have only a few small lodges. Menus are short and rooms are basic. This is the most remote part of the trek.

Manang and Muktinath: These are big trekking stops with bakeries, wider menus and better rooms. They are a nice treat after Nar Phu.

Drinking water: Bring a filter or purification tablets and refill from taps. Bottled water gets expensive higher up.

Power and Wi-Fi: Charging and Wi-Fi cost a small fee. Signal is weak or missing in the high valleys.

There are very few ATMs on the route and they are not reliable. Carry enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu for drinks, showers, charging, snacks and tips.

    Safety & Guide Information

Guides: Your guide is licensed and government registered, trained in altitude awareness and basic first aid, and knows the trail, the lodges and the villages. English-speaking guides are standard.

Emergencies: If someone has serious AMS, an injury or an illness, we organize a descent to a safe altitude. If needed, we arrange a helicopter evacuation. Evacuation costs are your responsibility, so travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover is essential. Make sure it covers you up to at least 5,500 m.

Porters: Porters are not included in this package. On a 30-day trek with three high passes, we strongly suggest one. We can add a porter at extra cost, and two trekkers can share one.

Pass days: On all three pass days you start before dawn. Your guide decides on the day if weather or snow makes a crossing unsafe. A spare day in your travel plans gives you room to wait.

Communication: Mobile coverage exists along much of the route but drops out in Nar Phu, on the passes and in deep valleys.

Seasons to avoid: Heavy monsoon rain from June to August brings landslides and road closures. Snow in winter can close all three passes.
